65-09870

65-09870 served in Vietnam with two AHC’s, the 117th Warlords and later the 116th Hornets. She also served as a liaison or maintenance aircraft with the 540th Transportation Company (Aircraft Maintenance General Support) for over a year between her service with the 117th and the 116th. No disrespect is meant to the crews who served on 65-09870 by choosing this aircraft to recreate EMU 309. Regrettably, we were unable to locate a Huey without Vietnam service to avoid this problem.

Because EMU INC. is dedicated to preserving the history of all Vietnam era Assault Helicopter Companies, it seems appropriate that the aircraft we were able to purchase also served much of its time in Vietnam in an AHC. We hope that anyone who remembers 65-09870 will be pleased we saved her from the scrap heap for our project.

870 in front of the hanger where the restoration was performed 870 Hovering down the Taxiway. Peter Olesko flying left seat w/Ray Murphy. 870 approaching her pad in front of the CalStar Hanger. Hayward Airport. Late April, 2003
870 shutting down. Ray Murphy in foreground thinking, we made it. Geoff Carr thinking "what have we started here?" From left to right; Geoff Carr on the phone, Peter Olesko listening in, Ray Murphy, and Scott Mowery aka Motor Mouth 6.

870 in front of her temporary home. Geoff Jones and Ray Murphy. Peter is asking himself, "where do I start first"? 870's profile shot.
Does this look Familiar? Geoff Carr in deep contemplation. Someone must have liked black. Peter must be thinking, What have I gotten myself into? It did fly all the way from Sacramento to Hayward.
Our first inspection of the engine of 870. This is the cleanest part of 870. A look at the Swash Plate and Cyclic push pull Tubes. Geoff Jones giving 870 a post flight.

Peter, Scott & Geoff admiring something. A look aft from atop 870. Hayward Airport in the background. Geoff Carr inspecting the what appears to be a Hanger Bearing. More to come
